I suspect that Don Winslow will never write a book that grabbed me as much as his epic thriller The Power of the Dog, but that won’t stop me from reading his stuff with hope in my heart. His newest tome (not to be confused with the 1941 Howard Hawks war flick) is set on the beaches of Southern California, where various amphibians engage the surfing life even as they go about the business of life on shore. The protagonist, Boone, a private investigator, is haunted by a case from his former life as a San Diego police detective. Winslow is funny, sharp-eyed, and—if you find the SoCal setting amenable—accurate. —Robert Birnbaum, Jun. 2, 2008
