This stunning debut EP from new-ish New York Band Sonoma Aero features waves of tough, confident guitar-bass-drum combos reminiscent of Swervedriver and Unwound, but they’re obviously onto something altogether their own—there’s something very special here. Deft, lazy vocals waft over a cauldron of intense rhythm-driven melodies, to surprisingly diverse effect. There’s nary a sense of repetition at play, and the myriad of sounds they create is astonishing, given their decidedly strict instrumentation. It must be due to their, um, oh yeah, because they’re extraordinary musicians who—you can hear it in every note—love the music they’re making. And it’s such a profound sense that you can’t help but love it too.
The songs seem composed in infinite layers, involved and developed. But because it’s all bathed in soothing comfort, even in a heartbreaker of a song like “Maui,” whose swirling backing vocals and intricate backbeat pull you under the band’s spell as quickly as you thought you were above it, that however precious the music may seem, it’s undeniably upfront in its intentions, which may only to be beautiful. And that it certainly accomplishes.
A true standout in today’s music, Sonoma Aero is, without reservation, required listening.
